Our Story

A Legacy of Southern Elegance

The Franklin House historic exterior with wraparound porch and blue shutters

The Franklin House was built by W.J. Thackston in 1909 on one of the first golf courses in South Carolina, the Sans Souci Country Club. Prior to construction, an 18th century cabin was moved to the site as a staging area, and was later used as a residence for housekeepers and a meeting place for boy scouts.

W.J. Thackston was a prominent businessman and real estate developer in turn-of-the-century Greenville. The Franklin House was one of the first houses built in the area and was featured in the 1913 Greenville Exposition in the Greenville News.

Historic Clarendon Ave was laid out after the house was built. W.J. Thackston was a member of the founding families that developed northwest Greenville including Benjamin Franklin Perry, the governor of South Carolina post Civil War, and Revolutionary War Captain William Young.
